It's earlier name is Barunah as referred by early settlers which was found by a Royal family. It was later changed to Barunai, until it finally known as Brunei.

Old Brunei was believed to be as Malay Hindu Buddhist traditions. Brunei became an Islam state when their first ruler, Awang Alak Betatar, embraced Islam and changed his name.

During the early years of Islam in the country, many Arab Muslims married into the first Brunei royal family.

British department system resides in Brunei during and since 1906 as an adviser to the Sultan at that time. It was 1946, when Brunei government was took over from British Administration and finally gained it's full independence in 1984.
